Some nerds were so mad about that “sexism in video games” Kickstarter that they made a competing series to prove that somehow an industry almost entirely staffed by men that makes products intended for men is actually discriminatory against men. This is what happens when women try to voice their opinion on how society treats them: hordes of men feel unreasonably threatened and scramble around like idiots trying to bring the discourse back to a place where men are in complete control, either through harrassment and threats of violence or by making some garbage like this. If you hear anyone trying to pull this embarrassing bullshit, do your duty as a decent human being and rub some dog turds on their face and neck and maybe pee on them too
^This.
That being said, please don’t give your money to the Tropes VS Women in Video Games Kickstarter.
I’ve been watching Feminist Frequency for a while now, and even though I really like the idea behind it, the execution leaves much to be desired. Anita Sarkeesian always manages to bring up some very good points, before blowing everything way out of propotions. Sexism in entertainment media is a problem, tropes are a thing, but not every woman showing emotions is the evil doing of a sexist writer, and not every product targeted towards men is sexist for not including a female audience.
Not everything is a gender issue.
Also, this is a blatant cash-grab. The whole point of being a Youtube partner is that you can sustain your project through the ad revenue you make with your videos. It’s a flawed system, but it works for shows of a few minutes per episode such as Feminist Frequency. Anita Sarkeesian still asks for donations at the end of each episode. I’m not saying what she’s doing isn’t hard work. Doing research, writing an episode, filming it… it all takes a lot of time, but there are hundreds of web producers who do so much more than her, and they don’t need to beg for donations. But alright, I’ll let that slip for now. She’s not that well known, not a lot of people watch her stuff… oh wait, she averages around 70k views.
And now she wants people to back her project, which is just what she’s been doing with FF until now, with an emphasis on gaming. This is not a short movie, or a story driven series, something that would need a budget to be made, but the very same thing she has done so far, with the help of her Youtube revenue.
In her Kickstarter video, she states that a lot of research is involved in this, so she needs to be backed. And she needs that money for her research because…
Fuck if I know. I’m gonna go out on a limb, and say she won’t play through every single game involving a female character. She most likely won’t even finish every game she talks about in this series. Not that I blame her, Let’s Plays should be more than sufficent for all intents and purposes. That means she won’t have to buy any games for this, and even if she does, I don’t expect her to buy more than 200 dollars worth. She also has decent equipment already, so she’d spend 300 dollars at worst for some new lighting equipment, but no new camera or microphones.
As for research, if she wants to make a series like this, she should already have a vast background knowledge in this area. This is still going to consume a lot of time, but that’s what the ad revenue is for. That’s the pay-off for her hard work.
Any self-respecting video producer would finance this project themselves, but I guess I can’t blame her for exploiting the idiots who backed her project for no other reason than “OMG FEMINSISM!”.
